Home peptide testing kits: what they can and can't tell you
Search for 'how to test peptide purity at home' and you'll find reagent kits, pH strips, and freezer tests. None of them confirm identity. None measure purity. They detect presence or absence of broad chemical features, which is useful for spotting an obvious scam vial, but worthless for telling you whether the molecule in the vial is the peptide on the label.
What home kits actually do
The reagent kits sold online (Marquis-style, biuret reagent, ninhydrin) react with broad chemical features: peptide bonds, amine groups, aromatic rings. A positive colour change tells you "there is something peptide-shaped in the vial." It does not tell you which peptide, how much of it, or what impurities are present.
The freezer test and the "shake foam" test are even less informative. Both are correlated with the presence of dissolved peptide but every lyophilised peptide and a long list of fillers behave the same way.
What the reliable tests measure
LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry): confirms the measured mass of the molecule matches the theoretical mass of the labelled peptide. The only test that actually answers "is this what it says it is?"
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography): separates the peptide from impurities, reports purity as a percentage, and produces a chromatogram you can inspect.
Quantitative HPLC: measures the actual mg of peptide vs the labelled mg. Catches under-filling and salt/water dilution.
LAL endotoxin: measures endotoxin contamination in EU/mg. Required for anything that will be injected.
All four require lab equipment that costs five-figures-plus and a trained operator. None of them have a credible at-home equivalent.
What home kits are still good for
Catching an obvious scam vial. If a reagent shows zero reaction across the spectrum it's meant to detect, the vial almost certainly contains no peptide at all, useful but rare. A positive reaction just means there's something peptide-like inside, which doesn't move you any closer to knowing whether it's safe or correct.
What to do instead
Demand the vendor's third-party CoA, tied to the exact batch number on your vial. Read how to read it.
